The only way this doesn’t work is if I quit

Women in a field.

Today, I’m taking you inside one of the topics I coach on most often with my gut health clients. Mindset. We’re going deep. But this is really, really important. And for many people, it’s the key to reaching their health goals. Especially when their goals seem to have nothing to do with mindset!

We’re going to break the belief that this won’t work for you.

In the coaching biz, we call this “lack of belief in yourself”. Here is how that looks in real life:

“This might work for other people, but it won’t work for me.”

“I’ve tried other programs before and they haven’t worked for me. This won’t work either.”

“Now isn’t a good time. Maybe when things slow down it will be easier.”

Maybe you’ve had some of those thoughts or a variation of them. I know I have. And I know the clients I work with have, too.

You’re in good company.

Welcome to having a human mind!

Storytime…

In the back of my mind, I wanted to hire a personal trainer for a while. Like, for years! But I never did. I had health goals and my current DIY-ed plan was no longer working. I wanted to ask for help but all the thoughts came up….over and over again.

I had the thought that I should be able to do this on my own. I thought that a personal trainer wouldn’t understand my situation and my goals so their program wouldn’t work for me. I thought I was the rare unicorn who was so special that professionals couldn’t crack the code on how to help me.

That sounds crazy, doesn’t it?! But those are the real thoughts I had.

Those are the thoughts that stopped me from getting help. Paralyzed me. For years.

Those thoughts prevented me from reaching my goals.

Instead, I struggled, I was in pain, I was embarrassed, and I wanted to give up.

That’s not a fun place to be in!

Can you relate? I see you nodding your head…

These are what we call limiting thoughts. They are your brain’s way of keeping you safe. Your brain hates change. It doesn’t like being uncomfortable. It seeks out evidence to show how whatever change you want to make is a bad idea.

Your brain is trying to keep you safe.

But to make progress and actually change your health trajectory, we need to break this thought.

Here’s the thing. I’m not a special unicorn. And neither are you.

There is a solution to your problem. You are NOT the only one who has ever faced this problem. There is a path to success.

It’s in your mindset.

What changed for me?

I made the decision that I was done feeling like shit. I decided to go all in and ask for help.

Let me tell you, it was the scariest thing I ever did.

(If you don’t know me IRL, let me say that I’m a recovering perfectionist. I would go out of my way to not ask for help. I would struggle and be in pain just so I didn’t have to ask for help. I didn’t like to be uncomfortable and I didn’t like to be anything less than perfect. Spoiler alert - that “perfectionist” tendency was the barrier to me reaching all of my goals. It’s not a good place to be!)

I had to be really uncomfortable for a while.

The funny thing is, as soon as I raised my hand and said, “I need some help”, in this case, it was walking up to the training booth at a conference I was attending, all the weird, awkward, uncomfortableness disappeared.

As soon as I said, “I need help,” the guy who would become my trainer said, “I got you.” And you know what, he has. It’s been about 9 months now and he’s my safety net and there to catch me when I fall.

And I do fall, and I fall hard, but with the help of a professional, I can get up much quicker, dust myself off, and get on with my life. I’m not alone and I don’t have to figure this out on my own.

All I need to do is not give up.

How comforting is that?

I needed to break the thought that he wouldn’t be able to help me. Again, I’m not a special unicorn. I’m human. With a very human brain.

How did I break this thought?

In my coaching program, I use several tools to help my clients work through limiting beliefs. They all center around creating new thoughts.

My old, limiting thought: Hiring a personal trainer won’t work for me because he doesn’t understand my situation or what I really need. He won’t get it.

My new thought: The only way this doesn’t work is if I quit.

Woah.

Talk about a different energy!

Do you feel the difference? The first thought is a total bummer. I can feel it sucking the life out of me at this very second.

On the other hand, the new thought feels really good! It’s a little scary because it puts the ownership solely onto me, but it feels empowering!

That’s the place I want to live, and that’s the place I want you to live!

When you commit to not quitting, it takes so much pressure off! It allows your brain to stop trying to figure out “how” and just focus on not giving up.

“All I have to do is not quit? I can do that!”

You will figure out the rest. Your brain already knows what to do. But you need to clean up those limiting thoughts before you can get there.

Changing your thoughts and your beliefs may be the missing piece to your health struggles. You are only capable of accomplishing things within the limits of your mindset.

To accomplish bigger things, you need different beliefs.

I encourage you to borrow my thought until you find your own.

As your future coach, I’ll leave you with one final promise….

I got you.

Come join me in the space of not quitting. No matter your goal, cleaning up your thoughts may be key. That’s why mindset work is a cornerstone of my coaching program.
