Nutty’s Story
We saved Nutty’s life. This 3 year old alpaca was destined to be euthanized. Nutty was born at a petting zoo. As he grew, he became overly attached to humans, instead of his 'paca friends.
Over-handling a cria (baby alpaca) is detrimental. They lose the ability to differentiate between humans and other alpacas. It’s called Berserk Llama Syndrome (BLS) aka “Crazy Alpaca“. It is a physiological condition which causes them to become overly aggressive to humans (ie - try to mate with you).
It’s dangerous. So most alpacas with this syndrome are euthanized.
Nutty was passed around from home to home, but never fit in. He was a young boy trying to be top dog. There’s a hierarchy in herds and when the alpha is challenged, it’s not good. We were contacted by our shearer and asked if we thought we could help.
We didn’t fully know what it would entail, but were up for the challenge. Our research on BLS indicated that some people have found success in rehabbing but only if they are put into a strong, established male herd. But that is rare.
The first few weeks were rough. Nutty tried to pick on the others as he fought for his place in the herd. Interestingly, he never went after Jerry, our alpha. We kept a close eye on everyone and ensured they were safe.
After about a month, our llama Brownie, finally had enough of Nutty’s shenanigans. Craig watched as Brownie literally tackled Nutty to the ground. It’s terrifying to watch animals fight it out. But we can’t interfere. It’s not our place. Obviously we would have stepped in if things got out of hand.
But the reality is that this is likely what happened in the other homes Nutty tried. The humans stepped in and never let the 'pacas work it out.
After that day, everything changed! Nutty is still crazy, but towards us, not his friends. He’s happy, healthy, and one of the good ol' boy’s club. We’re not entirely sure if this shifted Brownie into alpha position that day, but it really doesn’t matter. Our boy herd has never been stronger!
If it wasn’t for Brownie, I’m not sure what would have happened. So in reality, we didn’t save Nutty’s life, Brownie did. And that is one of the most beautiful things about rescuing animals. We are merely here to give them the space and the tools they need to live.
Let’s raise a glass to a life saved by a llama and his herd! And next time you think about taking your kids to a petting zoo, please remember this story. Those cute alpacas you and your kids are feeding, will likely end up with similar stories. Although they might not be as lucky as Nutty. ❤️
